Flyers finish regular season with loss to NW

This time the ending didn’t have a story book finish.
The St. Joseph Flyers were looking to upset their second unbeaten team of the season only to fall short as the Northwest Mohawks posted an 8-2 soccer win on Monday.
“Northwest came out strong and scored quickly. The controlled the ball the entire first half and kept on the attack. They are a very good team,” said Flyers’ coach Mike Balestra.
“Northwest was undefeated for the season and the Southern Ohio Conference champs. We congratulate them on their perfect season.”
The game was the final regular season contest not only of the season but for St. Joseph seniors Clay Willis, Chase Walters, Bryson Canter and Ashley Bartram. The Flyers ended the regular season 8-5-3.
“Our seniors who played their last regular season game are some great kids with a bright future in front of them. They were good role models for the younger players,” said Balestra of the seniors.
Isaac Whaley and Chase Walters had goals for the Flyers. Jared Johnson had six saves
and Dmitri Ward five saves as the Flyers’ goalkeepers.
Mason Campbell scored three goals, Tyler Webb had two goals with Austin Spears and Cody Mosley scoring one each for Northwest. The other goal was an own goal on the Flyers.
Billy Crabtree had seven saves and Nick Hicks one for the Northwest goalies.
St. Joseph had 20 shots with 10 on goal and three corner kicks. They had five fouls.
Northwest had 32 shots with 18 on goal and three corner kicks. The Mohawks had 10 fouls.
St. Joseph plays at Chesapeake in the Division III sectional tournament at 5 p.m. on Wednesday.
