To benefit spay and neuter of feral cats

The Lawrence County Humane Society is doing something for people and pets this month.

Until Nov. 17, they are having a shoe drive to raise funds for the humane society and are asking people to donate their gently worn shoes or new shoes.

And once the shoes are collected, the whole lot of them will be weighed and then they will get funds based on the total weight. The funds raised will go towards the spay and neuter of feral cats.

The shoes can be dropped off at the Ironton Health Department, South Point Storage and Iron City Hardware.

“We are excited about our shoe drive,” said Laura Brown, president of the Lawrence County Humane Society. “We know that most people have extra shoes in their closets they would to donate to us. By doing so, we raise money to help the animals in our county, and we have the chance to help families in developing countries who need economic opportunities. It’s a win-win for everyone.”

Funds2Orgs, a non-profit social enterprise, will then redistribute those shoes to their microenterprise partners in impoverished countries to start their own business.

Those partners use the money from their business to feed, clothe and house their families. One entrepreneur in Haiti made enough money to send her son to law school.
