COLUMBUS — Defenses are usually ahead of the offense early in the season. The Fairland Lady Dragons defense was way ahead on Saturday.

The Lady Dragons turned in a strong defensive effort as they shut down the Dublin Scioto Lady Irish 46-27 at the Reynoldsburg Shootout.

“The defense was very good. Offensively, we left 25 points out there. We missed a lot of layups and easy shots.,” said Fairland coach Jon Buchanan.

“We made some shots here and there, but I was definitely happy with how we played defense. We only gave up 15 points over the last three quarters.”

Emily Chapman scored 15 points and Allie Marshall had 13 to lead the offense. Alesha Simpson pulled down 15 rebounds for Fairland (1-0).

Scioto (0-1) took a 12-9 lead in the first quarter despite six points by Chapman.

But the defense held Scioto to just three points in the second quarter and Marshall knocked down eight points as Fairland took a 25-15 lead at the half.

Chapman had six more points in the third quarter as the Lady Dragons stretched their lead to 37-19.

Fairland will play at Ironton on Monday, Dec. 4, in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
