SOUTH POINT — Forget coffee or chewing gum. The best way to calm young players’ nerves is with a lot of points.
The young and inexperienced South Point Lady Pointers got off to a shaky start but had a big third quarter en route to a 58-35 season-opening win over the Greenup County Lady Musketeers on Tuesday.
“We were really nervous first quarter and then we settled down,” said Lady Pointers’ coach Dave Adams. “We played much better in the third quarter and we began to pull away.”
The Lady Pointers had three players in double figures with Leah Lawson and Emilee Whitt scoring 14 points each and Madison Kearns had 11.
Baylee Robinson scored 14 points to lead Greenup County.
Greenup took a 16-13 first quarter lead as Grace Haywood and Grace Jackson scored five points each and Robinson added four.
Maddy Khounlavong and Whitt each hit a 3-pointer and scored five points to keep the Lady Pointers close.
Kearns had five points in the second quarter as South Point rallied to take a 24-22 lead at the half.
The Lady Pointers outscored Greenup 21-6 in the third quarter to extend the lead to 45-28.
Lawson scored 10 of her points in the quarter while Whitt drained a trifecta.
Kearns and Lawson both made two foul shots as South Point went 4-of-6 from the line in the fourth quarter.
The Lady Pointers will host Chesapeake on Monday.
The Saturday game against New Boston has been postponed and will be rescheduled.
