The Fairland Lady Dragons waited a quarter before setting the tone. That’s because Emily Chapman waited until the second quarter to take over the game.
Chapman scored 15 of her 21 points in the second quarter as Fairland opened up a 15-point halftime lead and went on to beat the Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers 56-26 in an Ohio Valley Conference game on Monday.
Fairland’s defense shut down Ironton senior guard Lexi Wise to key the defense. Wise was held to just a pair of 3-point goals.
Fairland (2-0, 1-0) shot 22-of-49 from the field for 45 percent and had 16 turnovers.
Allie Marshall had 13 points and Alesha Simpson pulled down eight rebounds for Fairland.
Ironton (2-1, 1-1) was just 9-of-32 from the field for a frigid 28 percent. The Lady Tigers also committed 26 turnovers with many of them unforced.
“Their length was definitely a problem. We got some looks the first half. We missed 12, 14 points that I thought were makeable shots. But they were better than us,” said Ironton coach Doug Graham.
Lexie Arden led Ironton with 13 points and seven rebounds. Wise added eight rebounds.
“There’s still a lot of basketball left. We have to get back to work and get better,” said Graham.
Ironton got trifectas from Arden and Wise to trail just 7-6 after the first quarter.
But Chapman got 15 of her 19 first half points in the second quarter including back-to-back 3-pointers to finish the half and it was 28-13.
A foul shot by Riley Schreck had Ironton down 36-19 and then Fairland ran off six unanswered points to finished the quarter. Harlie Lyons hit a triple to begin the fourth quarter and Fairland’s lead was 45-19.
Layups by Simpson and Britney Thompson with under a minute to play set the final score and gave Fairland its largest lead of the game.
On Thursday, Ironton visits Gallipolis and Fairland goes to Coal Grove.
