Two more astronomical displays expected in January
The final full moon of 2017 was a supermoon.
The weekend’s full moon took place at perigee, when the rocky satellite is closest to the earth, making it appear 7 percent larger and 16 percent brighter than usual.
This weekend’s full moon was the only supermoon of the year, but, if you missed it, there are two more coming up soon.
The full moons which will occur in the new year, on Jan. 2 and Jan. 31, will be the latter installments of a rare trilogy of supermoons, which kicked off with this weekend’s showing.
