SOUTH POINT — When Douglas Shaffer got hot, it lit a fire in the South Point Pointers.
Shaffer scored 12 of his 15 points in the second quarter and the Pointers came to life in the second half to beat the scrappy Chesapeake Panthers 64-46 in an Ohio Valley Conference game on Tuesday.
“We couldn’t hit anything the first half and we had too many turnovers. Shaffer got hot in the second quarter and that saved us,” said Pointers’ coach Travis Wise.
“We did a better job in the second half and Gunther and (Dustin) McCarty really helped us off the bench. It wasn’t pretty but I’ll take it.”
Jared Whitt scored 11 points while Gunther came off the bench to get 10. Austin Webb scored 12 points — all in the second half — for South Point (2-1, 1-0).
Cole Mills and Austin Jackson second 11 points each for Chesapeake (0-3, 0-1).
The game was tied 13-13 after the first quarter.
Gunther scored six of his points in the first quarter while Whitt had five points including a 3-pointer.
Mills and Kamren Harless combined for nine points in the first quarter.
Shaffer drained three 3-pointers in the second quarter and was fouled on another attempt and made all three free throws for his 12 points in the quarter as South Point went up 30-28 at the half.
Jackson scored five points, Christian Layne four points and Mills hit his second 3-pointer and had four points in the quarter.
But then came the third quarter.
The Pointers limited the Panthers to just seven points and took a 49-35 lead.
Five different Pointers scored in the quarter with Tayshaun Fox getting five points, Webb four and both Gunther and Shaffer hitting 3-pointers.
Webb score nine points in the fourth quarter including 5-of-7 at the foul line as the Pointers outscored the Panthers 15-11.
On Friday, South Point hosts Portsmouth and Chesapeake entertains Rock Hill.
