PORTSMOUTH — The Fairland Lady Dragons accomplished two things in their 59-18 Ohio Valley Conference win over the Portsmouth Lady Trojans on Thursday.
One, they won and remained unbeaten.
Two, 5-foot-5 senior guard Emily Chapman scored the 1,000th point of her career.
Chapman finished the game with 28 points and reached her personal milestone with a 3-point goal at the 6:30 of the fourth quarter.
Chapman needed 28 points to reach 1,000. Once she hit the magic figure she was replaced.
Fairland coach Jon Buchanan was happy for Chapman but was impressed by the defensive effort.
“We didn’t play well to start the game, but we played well defensively. We held the (Jasmine) Eley girl scoreless and that was big,” said Buchanan.
“Our defense is still playing pretty solid. To hold a team under 20 points is a big deal. We’ve only played six games so there’s a lot of basketball to play. This part of the season is kind of like the appetizer.”
Allie Marshall chowed down on the Portsmouth defense for 15 points as Fairland improved to 6-0 and 4-0 in the OVC.
Shai Howard had seven points for Portsmouth (0-6, 0-5).
Marshall scored five points in the first quarter as Fairland led 8-3. She had eight more points in the second quarter and the spread was 22-8 at the half.
As she does so often, Chapman got hot and scored 19 of Fairland’s 25 points in the third quarter and the lead was now 47-13.
Fairland will play in the Title IV Classic in Washington, D.C., Dec. 28-30. Portsmouth visits Rock Hill on Jan. 4.
