Fairland girls fall to Lady Blazers

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Fairland Lady Dragons hopes for a win in their first game in the nation’s capital was vetoed.
In a game that went down to the final minute, the Lady Dragons fell to the Murry-Bergtraum (N.Y.) Lady Blazers 51-46 on Thursday in the Title IX Holiday Tournament.
Emily Chapman had 19 points, six assists and four steals to lead Fairland (6-1). Kelsie Warnock had 12 points and three assists while Allie Marshall pulled down 10 rebounds.
Deja Francis scored 18 points while Infiniti Hammonds added 10 points and seven assists for the Lady Blazers (3-3).
Bergtraum jumped out to an 8-0 lead to start the game before Fairland cut the deficit to 11-8 on a basket by Alesha Simpson.
Francis scored with 1:55 to play in the first quarter and the Blazers had a 15-10. Lead.
Bergtraum was up 19-11 after a basket by Francis at the 5:09 mark. Fairland came back to tie the game on a 3-pointer by Warnock and Chapman followed with a triple at the 3:06 mark to give Fairland a 22-19 lead.
Britney Thompson scored to up Fairland’s lead to 24-19 and the Lady Dragons led 24-23 at the half.
The lead changed hands five times in the third quarter with the Blazers taking a 34-31 lead on baskets by Francis and Starr Garcia with 1:38 on the clock. Taylor Wilson got Fairland within 34-3 just before the end of the quarter.
Fairland took the lead three times in the fourth quarter and tied the game at 44 with 2:37 to play after a basket by Simpson and two free throws by Chapman.
Francis and Jozai Vazquez both scored to put the Blazers up 48-44 before Wilson’s basket cut the deficit to 48-46 with 58 seconds to go.
But Fairland was forced to foul and Hammonds was 3-of-4 at the line and it was 51-46 with just six seconds left.
Fairland will play again on Friday.
