Dragons outscore Pointers, 104-81

PROCTORVILLE — You say you like offense, eh?
Well, the Fairland Dragons and South Point Pointers had plenty of offensive fireworks in Friday’s Ohio Valley Conference game.
The Dragons had five players in double figures led by Kollin Van Horn and Keedrick Cunningham who combined for 58 points in a 104-81 win over the Pointers.
“We came out well and then they got hot,” said Fairland coach Nathan Speed.
“But then our guys responded to the challenge.”
Fairland led just 74-65 after three quarters before outscoring the Pointers 30-15 in the fourth quarter to pull away to the win.
Van Horn got 29 points on 14-of-19 shooting to go with 10 rebounds. Cunningham was 12-of-16 shooting and had 27 points with eight rebounds and five assists to help the Dragons improve to 8-3 overall and remain unbeaten in the OVC at 4-0.
Isaiah Howell finished with 15 points, 11 rebounds and four assists, Luke Thomas had 15 points, six assists and three steals while Ty Staten had 14 points and four assists for Fairland.
Both Thomas and Howell eclipsed the 1,000-point career milestone during the game.
The loss spoiled a 35-point performance by the Pointers’ Tayshaun Fox who also had five rebounds. He made four 3-pointers.
Jared Whitt also hit four 3-pointers and scored 18 points while Austin Webb had 10 points and five rebounds for South Point (2-4, 1-2). Douglas Shaffer had two 3-pointers and eight points.
Cunningham had 10 points while Van Horn and Howell got six each to put Fairland up 24-13 at the end of the first quarter. Fox scored nine to keep the Pointers within range.
The lead was 49-33 at the half as Howell and Staten each hit a 3-pointer and scored five points. Fox and Webb scored six each for South Point.
The Pointers came out firing in the second half as they outscored Fairland 32-25 to get within nine points.
Fox hit a pair of 3-pointers and scored 16 points, Shaffer made his 3-pointers and Whitt added two more trifectas. Van Horn scored 12 points in the quarter.
Thomas hit two shots from beyond the arc, Staten had five points including another triple, Cunningham scored 10 points and Van Horn seven as the Dragons began to pull away.
On Tuesday, South Point hosts Gallipolis while Fairland visits Portsmouth.
