Lady Dragons use team effort to top Chesapeake

PROCTORVILLE — The Chesapeake Lady Panthers’ defense was geared to stop Fairland Lady Dragons’ high-scoring guard Emily Chapman.
The Lady Panthers did hold Chapman to 12 points, but her teammates made their presence felt in a 58-34 Ohio Valley Conference win over Chesapeake on Monday.
Alesha Simpson had 12 points and four steals, Allie Marshall got 10 points, nine rebounds and four steals and Harley Lyons came off the bench to hit four 3-pointers and score 14 points as Fairland (9-3, 6-0) remained unbeaten in the league.
Chesapeake (5-5, 3-3) was led by Natalee Hall with 13 points, five rebounds and two assists. Brooke Webb had 11 rebounds and two assists while Shia Ervin added eight points, seven rebounds and two assists.
Fairland raced to a 9-0 lead and it was 20-8 when Kelsie Warnock hit a 3-pointer with 1:05 left in the quarter.
Hall scored to get Chesapeake within 20-10 at the 6:39 mark of the second quarter, but Fairland
Went up 32-12 on a basket by Chapman, two foul shots by Simpson and Marshall’s basket at the 1:17 mark.
Hall’s two foul shots made it 32-14 at the half.
Lyons hit a 3-pointer at the 1:41 mark and the lead was 41-17. Ervin hit two baskets for Chesapeake but Lyons had another triple and the lead was 44-21 at the end of the third quarter.
Fairland opened up its biggest lead at 56-29 on a 3-pointer by Brittany Thompson with 3:17 to play and matched the point difference on a basket by Lyons at the 1:56 mark for a 58-31 lead.
The Lady Panthers closed out the scoring on a free throw by Ervin and a basket by Maddie Ward with 15 seconds to go.
On Thursday, Fairland hosts Rock Hill and Chesapeake entertains Gallipolis.
