Mildred Payne
April 3, 1933 — Jan. 14, 2018
Mildred A. “Midge” Schweickart Payne, 84, of Ironton, passed away peacefully Sunday, Jan. 14, 2018, at Community Hospice Care Center, Ashland, Kentucky. Mrs. Payne was born in Ironton on April 3, 1933, a daughter to the late Charles and Angela (Geswein) Schweickart. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Dr. William Paul Payne, who passed away Oct. 21, 2002.
Mrs. Payne was a 1951 graduate of Saint Joseph High School and a 1954 graduate of Saint Mary’s School of Nursing. She was a former nurse for Lawrence County General Hospital. Midge was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church and the Catholic Women’s Club.
She was also a member of the Red Hat Society, Ironton Country Club 9 Hole Ladies Club and Derik Street Gang Card Club. She was also active in the Ironton Senior Center.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by sister, Rosemary Haas; and four brothers, Charles, Ralph, James and Elmer Schweickart.
She is survived by three daughters, Kathy (Tim) Walters, of Ashland, Kentucky, Becky (Ben) Needham, of Grove City, and Peggy (Chris) Barnes, of Ironton; son, Mike (Lesley) Payne, of Chillicothe; grandchildren, Andrew (Katie) Walker, Taylor (Amy) Walker, Aaron (Meghan) Brooking, Sarah Brooking, Josh (Lindsey) Needham, Brooke Needham, Whitney (Aaron) Hindy, Tristen Needham, Bryce (Heidi) Barnes, Blake (Kristina) Barnes, Brandon Barnes, Sidney Payne, Ryan Payne, J.T.Snowden, Cameron Snowden and Logan Snowden; four great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be 1 p.m. Thursday at St. Lawrence Church, Ironton, with Father David Huffman officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 11 a.m. until the time of the service Thursday at the church.

Avanelle Robinson
July 30, 1929 — Jan. 13, 2018
Avanelle “Abbie” Mae Taylor Robinson, 88, of Ironton, passed away Saturday, Jan. 13, 2018, at a local health care facility. The Lawrence County native was born July 30, 1929, a daughter of the late E.C. “Frog” and Mabel Taylor. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Charles H. Robinson Jr., who passed away Aug. 19, 2011. Mrs. Robinson was the last surviving member of her family, and she was the middle child of six siblings.
Mrs. Robinson was a 1949 graduate of Ironton High School. Abbie was a wonderful cook, famous for her homemade spaghetti sauce and apple pies. She enjoyed her family and loved spending time with her grandchildren. Before Alzheimer’s disease overtook her, Abbie was a serving member of First Baptist Church, Ironton.
She was active in her Sunday school class, the WPA class, served on the kitchen committee and especially enjoyed working with the children during the church’s after school program, Adventure Club.
For many years, Abbie and Charles were season ticket holders of the Ironton Fighting Tigers football team, of whom both were avid fans. She also enjoyed watching The Ohio State Buckeyes on television.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by infant son, Fredrick Richard Robinson; great-grandson, James Raymond Robinson; two sisters, Shirley Diamond Henry and Rose Mary Beasley; four brothers, Bill Taylor, Fred Taylor, Jake “E.C.” Taylor, Jr. and Frank Taylor; and in-laws, Addie and Charles H. Robinson Sr.
She is survived by three children, Dave (Charlene) Robinson, of Ironton, Jim (Mary) Robinson, of South Point, and Cheryl (Bill) Hughes, of Ironton; six grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and a very special friend, Joan Long Nelson, of Ironton.
Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at the Tracy Brammer-Monroe Funeral Home, Ironton, with the Rev. Bill Hughes and pastor Matt O’Bryant officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery, Ironton, and visitation will be 11 a.m. until the time of the service Thursday at the funeral home. Verna Humphrey
Feb. 27, 1932 — Jan. 14, 2018
Verna L. Humphrey, 85, of Coal Grove, died Sunday, Jan. 14, 2018, at Community Hospice Care Center, Ashland, Kentucky. She was born Feb. 27, 1932, in Lawrence County, a daughter of the late Selby Conaway and Helen Littlejohn Conaway. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Charles “Bunk” Conaway.
Verna was a telephone operator for Ohio Bell, worked at Parsons Department Store in Ashland, Kentucky, was the owner of Harmon’s Grocery in Forestdale, retired as a truant officer at Dawson-Bryant Schools in Coal Grove, was a graduate of Rock Hill High School and attended Coal Grove United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Neal Humphrey; a daughter, Christine Lynn (Harmon) Thomas, of Ashland, Kentucky; a sister, Lois (William) Webb, of Coal Grove; a half-brother, William Grounds, of Columbus; four grandchildren, Heather Lynn (Todd) Moore, Sarah Elizabeth (Bart) Lemaster, Hyatt Anthony (Macaela) Clarke and Tiffany Johnson; and six great-grandchildren, Brody Moore, Layton Henry, Whitley Henry, Bryce Lemaster, Caleb Clarke and Maddie Johnson.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Slack and Wallace Funeral Home, South Point, with pastor Brad Jenkins officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery, Ironton. Deana McCoy
Deana Kay McCoy, 52, of Batavia, died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2018, at the Mercy Health Clermont Hospital, Batavia. She is survived by her husband, Walter Albert McCoy.
Funeral service will be 1 p.m. today at Phillips Funeral Home, Ironton, with Brother Randy Patrick officiating. John McCoy
John H. McCoy, 67, of Chesapeake, died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2018. He is survived by his wife, Bonnie McCoy.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hall Funeral Home and Crematory, Proctorville. Burial will follow in Union Hill Cemetery, Chesapeake. Terri Martin
Aug. 27, 1957 — Jan. 12, 2018
Terri Lynn Martin (Gettys), 60, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family at Springfield Regional Medical Center, Springfield, on Friday, Jan. 12, 2018. She was born Aug. 27, 1957, in Key West, Florida, the daughter of the late John R. and Myrtle (Lewis) Gettys.
Terri enjoyed garage sales, gardening, visiting thrift stores and going to the beach. She was employed at Shipper’s Automotive Group in Urbana.
Survivors include the love of her life, her dog, “Dusty;” her faithful soul mate of 17 years, Bob Coppess; two children, Michelle Bowshier and Michael Gettys (Shawna Sherrock), all of Springfield; three grandchildren, Mariah Bowshier, Ashley (Codey) Gossett and Austin Gettys; one great-grandchild, Henley Gossett; three sisters, Rae Ann (Jack) Howe, of Springfield; Donna Ream, of Urbana, and Tammy (Steve) Rust, of Springfield; and several nieces and nephews.
In keeping with the wishes of Terri Martin, there will be no funeral or memorial service, but all are welcome to attend the celebration of Terri’s life to be announced at a later date. Arrangements are being handled by the Jones-Kenney-Zechman Funeral Home, Springfield.
Ken McCoy
Retired Sergeant Major Ken McCoy, 71, died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2018, at Kettering Medical Center, Dayton. He is survived by his wife, Brenda (Paulus) McCoy. Visitation will be 10 a.m.-1 p.m. at Memorial Hall, Greenville, followed by a memorial service. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Greenville, with the U.S. Army Honor Guard conducting a graveside military service. Lewis Caudill
Lewis Carroll Caudill, 81, of Russell, Kentucky, died Friday, Jan. 12, 2018, at his residence.
