CHESAPEAKE — Fortunately, the Coal Grove Hornets have their own border patrol.
For the Hornets, its Cory Borders who hit five 3-pointers as he scored a career-high 19 points to lead the Hornets to a 48-34 Ohio Valley Conference win over the Chesapeake Panthers on Saturday.
“Thank goodness for Borders,” said Hornets’ coach Kevin Vanderhoof. “We played pretty good, but we struggled at times after playing last night.
“We took care of the ball, we shot the ball better and we shot free throws better. It was different paying last night and then coming back to play this afternoon. We weren’t used to that.”
Jeb Jones added nine points and Jordan Case seven for the Hornets (9-4, 5-3).
Chesapeake (4-10, 3-5) got nine points each from Cole Mills and Austin Jackson. Eli Archer and Tylan Hutchison scored six each.
Mills hit a 3-pointer and Jackson and Hutchison scored as Chesapeake scored seven unanswered points to start the game.
But the Hornets scored the next 10 points — four by Case — as they took a 10-7 lead.
Borders hit a pair of 3-pointers and Sam Angelo scored four of his six points as Coal Grove extended its lead to 20-12 at the half. Hutchison hit a 3-poiners and scored four the Panthers’ five points in the quarter.
Jones scored to give Coal Grove a 26-16 lead in the third quarter. Mills hit a trifecta but Borders drained a triple of his own and the lead was back at 10.
Jackson’s basket before the end of the quarter made it 29-21.
Archer scored to get the Panthers within 29-23 to start the fourth quarter, but Jones went 3-of-4 at the foul line and the lead was 32-23.
Angelo’s basket pushed the lead to 35-25 and a 3-pointer by Borders opened up a 38-27 lead.
Mills’ 3-pointer cut the deficit to 40-32 but that was as close as the Panthers would get. Aaron Music and Case each made two foul shots to cap the scoring and seal the win.
On Tuesday, Coal Grove hosts Gallipolis and Chesapeake entertains Portsmouth.
