COAL GROVE — After a big first quarter, the Coal Grove Lady Hornets appeared to take off the second quarter.
They went back to work in the third quarter.
The Lady Hornets shook off a bad second quarter as they beat the Chesapeake Lady Panthers 69-42 in an Ohio Valley Conference game on Thursday.
“We came out big in the first quarter and then slowed down in the second. At halftime, I told my kids they cheated themselves that quarter by playing the way they did,” said Coal Grove coach Rick Roach.
“We came out and responded. My kids came out and showed we can shoot the 3s when needed.”
Emily Compliment had a big game with 27 points and eight rebounds. Kasey Murphy had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds and Addi Dillow scored 12 points.
Destiny Dolen pulled down 12 rebounds while Dillow and Bailey McKnight combined for 13 of the Lady Hornets’ 21 assists.
Chesapeake (9-9, 6-5) was led by Karli Davis with 18 points and Natalee Hall scored 13.
Coal Grove (14-4, 9-3) jumped out to a 25-8 lead as Compliment scored nine points, Murphy six and McKnight hit a pair of 3-pointers.
The Lady Panthers bounced back and outscored Coal Grove 15-4 in the second quarter to get within 29-23 at the half.
But the Lady Hornets pulled away to a 49-32 lead after three quarters as Compliment hit three 3-pointers and scored 11 points.
Davis hit a 3-pointer and scored five points for Chesapeake.
Dillow scored six points while McKnight and Compliment each hit a 3-pointer and scored five points in the fourth quarter.
Davis hit another trifecta and scored five more points in the fourth quarter.
“I am really pleased with how well our team is playing now that we are healthy. Hopefully, it’s enough to get us a good seed in the tournament. But more importantly, it’s enough to have us finish our regular season on a positive note,” said Roach.
Chesapeake plays Washington Court House at noon on Saturday in the Tackett’s Body Shootout at Ironton.
On Monday, Coal Grove is at Ironton and Chesapeake hosts Fairland.
