Lady Dragons rout Blue Angels to clinch OVC title

GALLIPOLIS — The league race has ended.
The Fairland Lady Dragons rolled past the Gallipolis Blue Angels 65-34 on Thursday to clinch the Ohio Valley Conference basketball title outright.
The Lady Dragons — who shared the title last year — are now 18-2 overall and 12-0 in the league.
Emily Chapman had a big all-around game to lead the Lady Dragons. Chapman hit four 3-pointers and scored 16 points, grabbed five rebounds, had six assists, five steals and two blocked shots.
Alesha Simpson scored 12 points, Taylar Wilson got 11 and Allie Marshall added 10 as four Lady Dragons reached double figures.
Gallipolis (8-10, 3-9) was led by Alex Barnes with 14 points and four rebounds. Ryelee Sipple had 10 points and Ashton Webb added five rebounds and three assists.
Kelsie Warnock had nine rebounds and four assists while Marshall had four steals.
Fairland jumped out to a 17-4 lead after a 3-pointer by Simpson at the 3:28 mark. Maddy Petro scored at 1:47 but Chapman buried a 3-pointer and it was 20-6.
Jenna Stone came off the bench to hit a 3-pointer with 11 seconds left in the quarter and Fairland led 24-8.
Baskets by Barnes, Sipple and Abby Cremeans and two foul shots at the 4:18 mark cut the Fairland lead to 26-16. But Fairland went on an 11-0 run to end the half and it was 37-16.
Simpson hit a 3-pointer to start the second half and Wilson and Marshall both scored for a 47-18 lead.
Barnes hit a 3-pointer and Webb scored, but Harley Lyons and Chapman each knocked down a 3-pointer and the lead was 53-23 with 3:22 left in the third quarter.
Marshall scored with 11 seconds on the clock and the lead was 57-25.
Two free throws by Simpson and a bucket by Wilson had Fairland up 61-27. Wilson scored with 2:45 to play and the Lady Dragons had built a 63-32 lead.
Mia Howard scored for Fairland and Sipple hit a shot with 28 seconds left to set the final score.
On Monday, Fairland visits Chesapeake and Gallipolis goes to Portsmouth.
