You win some, you lose some, and you give a few away.
The St. Joseph Flyers saw a six-point lead evaporated late as they lost 56-51 to the New Boston Tigers on Saturday.
“We had a couple of unforced turnovers and missed a couple of shots that went in and out. We pretty much gave that one away,” said Flyers’ coach Rex Cooksey.
“We missed a lot of easy shots around the baskets early and we missed some foul shots. But we fought the whole game. It came down to two or three plays.”
Joey McDavid hit 9-of-11 field goal attempts including three 3-point goals and scored a game-high 22 points to lead the Flyers (13-4). Zach Roach added nine points and two assists.
The Flyers’ senior center Chase Walters scored 10 points and he reached a career milestone with 1,000 points. Walters needed 10 points entering the game to achieve the feat. He also had 10 rebounds and three assists.
Clay Willis had seven rebounds and Isaac Whaley four assists.
“Chase is a very deserving kid. He’s a hard worker and very unselfish. And he’s had a lot of good teammates,” said Cooksey.
New Boston had four players in double figures as Tyler Caldwell scored 17, Kyle McQuithy made four deep 3-pointers for 12 points, Drake Truitt scored 11 and Kyle Sexton 10.
The Flyers led 10-7 after the first quarter as Roach hit a triple and McDavid had three points. McQuithy hit a 3-pointer for the Tigers.
New Boston rallied to take a 24-21 halftime lead as McQuithy hit two more 3-pointers, Caldwell had a triple and Truitt scored six points including 4-of-6 at the line.
McDavid hit a trifecta and scored seven of the Flyers’ 11 points. Clay Willis and Roach had the other two baskets.
McDavid rallied the Flyers in the third quarter as he knocked down a pair of 3-pointers and scored 12 points. Isaac Whaley and Willis also hit 3-pointers as St. Joseph took a 41-38 lead.
But late mistakes and two missed free throws enabled the Tigers to rally.
Walters scored eight points but Caldwell hit a 3-pointer and scored nine points and Truitt added five more.
The Flyers visit Portsmouth Notre Dame on Tuesday.
