JACKSON — The Coal Grove Lady Hornets were tired and ready to go home and get some sleep.
But not until they finished one more job.
Playing their fourth game in seven days, the Lady Hornets were tired but still had enough energy to beat the Wellston Lady Golden Rockets 60-44 in the Division III sectional tournament on Monday.
“You could tell this was our fourth game in seven days. We were tired,” said Lady Hornets’ coach Rick Roach.
“We played decent in the first quarter then got sloppy when they started fouling us hard. We had good scoring from all the starters.”
Baylee McKnight and Addi Dillow posted identical numbers with two 2-point goals, two 3-point goals and four free throws for 14 points.
Kasey Muprhy had 13 points, Emily Compliment nine points and Destiny Dolen eight for the Lady Hornets.
Tory Doles scored 14 points and Sydney Mullins 11 for Wellston (9-13).
Coal Grove (18-5) will now play Alexander at 2:45 p.m. on Saturday in the sectional finals.
“We are excited to have reached 18 wins this season. The last time we had that many wins was the 2006-2007 season. Before that it was the early 90’s when the girls program had that many wins,” said Roach.
Coal Grove got off to an 18-6 start as Murphy scored six points and McKnight hit a 3-pointer and scored five points.
Compliment had five points including three foul shots in the second quarter as the Lady Hornets took a 29-17 lead into the locker room.
Doles hit a pair of 3-pointers to keep Wellston close.
Coal Grove extended the lead to 47-30 after three quarters.
Dillow got hot and scored seven points including a trifecta. McKnight also had a trey as she and Murphy scored five points each.
Mullins made two 3-pointers and scored 10 of Wellston’s 13 points in the quarter.
Each team had 13 points in the fourth quarter with Dillow hitting another triple along with two foul shots as five different players scored.
Kaylee Taynor and Daycee Clemons had 3-point goals for Wellston and Emily Kisor scored all four of her points.
