Hornets wins D4 sectional

McDERMOTT — Slow starts and big finishes have been somewhat of a trademark for the Coal Grove Hornets this season.
The Hornets used that trademark style to give them an earmark win as they routed the Manchester Greyhounds 61-39 on Tuesday to win the Division IV sectional title.
Coal Grove will now play Corning Miller at 2 p.m. on Sunday in the district semifinals at the Ohio University Convocation Center.
Coal Grove (16-6) fell behind in the first quarter and was tied at halftime before exploding in the second half.
Sam Angelo scored a game high 20 points — 12 in the second half — to lead the Hornets. Aaron Music added 13 points and Jeb Jones scored eight.
Gage Lucas scored 14 points, Tanner Utterback 10 and Jamie Combs nine for the Greyhounds (7-17).
Lucas made a pair of 3-pointers and both Combs and Utterback hit a 3-pointers as Manchester took a 15-10 first quarter lead.
Jones score six of his eight points and Music added four points to account for the Coal Grove scoring.
The Hornets’ defense held the Greyhounds to just six points in the second quarter and tied the game 21-21 at the half.
Angelo scored eight points in the quarter including 2-of-2 at the foul line.
Coal Grove came out in the second half and went on a 9-0 run over the first three minutes to grab a 30-21 lead and was never headed.
The Hornets went on to outscore the Greyhounds 25-8 in the quarter to take a comfortable 46-29 lead.
Angelo continued his hot shooting with 10 points that included a 3-pointer goal and a three-point play. Cordy Borders also hit a trey and scored six points while Jordan Case had four points.
Four different players had a basket for Manchester.
Jalen McKenzie came off the bench in the fourth quarter to scored six points and Music added four as Coal Grove continued to pull away.
Lucas scored five points and Utterback hit a 3-pointer for the Greyhounds.
