SOUTH POINT — The Chesapeake Lady Panthers know what it takes to win, so they did it.
The Lady Panthers did what was needed as they beat the South Point Lady Pointers 6-3 in an Ohio Valley Conference game on Monday.
Brooke Webb the win as she scattered nine hits and struck out 10. Jordan Storms delivered the key blow with a grand slam.
“The keys in softball are pitching and defense. Brooke struck out 10 and didn’t walk anybody and we didn’t have any errors. So, the two things we set out to do we accomplished,” said Chesapeake coach Aaron Rice.
“We didn’t have many hits but we had two big hits, especially Jordan.”
Chesapeake (2-2, 1-0) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Ryleigh Swann walked, stole second, took third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by Webb.
The Lady Panthers got what proved to be the runs they needed in the third to go up 5-0.
Katy Spears walked, Webb was intentionally walked and Lyric Bair was walked and Storms crashed a grand slam.
“That was a big hit for us,” said Rice.
Webb hit a solo home run in the seventh for an insurance run.
South Point got a run in the third on a single by Sophie Morrison, a wild pitch and Sara Allen’s base hit.
The Lady Pointers made it 5-2 in the sixth when Allen singled, took second on a ground out and came home when Abby Hannah hit into a fielder’s choice.
South Point added a run in the bottom of seventh on singles by Duncan, Newton and Jill Aylsworth and a ground out.
Chesapeake hosts Ironton on Wednesday.
