AID — It’s the little things that mean a lot.
The Symmes Valley Lady Vikings played small ball as they beat the Portsmouth Notre Dame Lady Titans 3-2 in a Southern Ohio Conference game on Monday.
“That’s a big win. It was huge for the kids,” said Lady Vikings’ coach Jeff “Odie” Estep. “We didn’t have that many hits, but we executed when we needed. I told the girls that things happen if you do the little things right.”
Notre Dame took a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth.
Cassie Schaeffer hit a solo home run to start the rally. Katie Dettwiller singled, moved to second on a ground out and came home on a hit by Baylee Webb.
Symmes Valley got a run back in the bottom of the inning.
Taylor Webb walked, stole second, took third on a wild pitch and came home on a throwing error.
The Lady Vikings tied the game in the fifth when Ericca Ross walked, Morgan Jenkins sacrifice courtesy runner Kelsie Gothard to second, Sarah Kingery walked, and both advanced on a wild pitch and Gothard scored on a wild pitch.
In the bottom of the seventh, Jenkins singled to start the inning, Emily Sharp had a bunt single and Hayes put down a bunt and a throwing error on the play scored Jenkins with the winning run.
Kingery got the win as she allowed just six hits, struck out four and did not walk a batter.
Schaefer took the loss as she gave up three hits, struck out eight and walked three.
Symmes Valley hosts Sciotoville East on Tuesday and visit Notre Dame on Wednesday.
