FRANKLIN FURNACE — Dan McDavid had to find some lumber to start a fire. Once he got the fire going, he players really heated up.
Tied 1-1 after three and a half innings, the Green Bobcats broke the game open with nine runs in the fourth inning en route to an 11-1 Southern Ohio Conference win over the Portsmouth Notre Dame Titans on Monday.
“It was a really cold night and it took a while for our bats to heat up,” said McDavid, the Bobcats’ head coach.
“We got a great effort out of Tayte Carver. He had command of the strike zone. He’s thrown well each time out.”
Carver pitched a two-hitter as he struck out 10, didn’t walk a batter and hit one.
Green (4-1, 2-0) had nine hits with Tanner Kimbler going 3-for-3 with four runs scored, Carver 1-3 with a double and three runs batted in, Bruce Ponn 2-4 with a double and three RBI and Ethan Carpenter 1-2 and two RBI.
Mason Barver was 1-2 and Eli Webb 1-1.
Notre Dame took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when C.J. Corns singled, stole second and scored on a hit by Tyler Speas.
Green tied the game in the bottom of the inning.
Kimbler singled, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and came home when Carver grounded out.
The Bobcats erupted for nine runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Kimbler singled, Carver was safe on an error and Ponn ripped a two-run double.
Levi Singleton and Hayden Whittis both walked and Barber had an RBI single. An outfield throwing error on the play scored another run.
Carpenter delivered a two-run single, Rylee Maynard was safe on an error and Kimbler had an RBI single.
Carver followed with a two-run double to cap the uprising.
The Bobcats ended the game early with a run in the sixth when Kimbler and Carver walked and Ponn got a long run-scoring single.
