CHESAPEAKE — Landon Smith wasn’t a one-man team, it just seemed that way.
Smith pitch a five hitter and went 3-for-3 with five runs batted in as the Rock Hill Redmen beat the Chesapeake Panthers 14-2 in a six-inning Ohio Valley Conference game on Friday.
Smith struck out eight and walked one in getting the complete game. The two runs were earned.
“That was a big game for Smith. It took him a while to get loose. But from the third inning on, he was lights out,” said Rock Hill coach Barry Litteral.
“We played well defensively, we were patient at the plate and had some timely hits. We put the ball in play and still had seven walks. We had a lot of two-out hits which is very important.”
Rock Hill (8-1, 6-1) took a 1-0 lead in the first when Cody Lewis singled, Kaleb Kidd walked and Logan Hankins had an RBI single.
Chesapeake (3-4, 2-3) came back to take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the first.
Evan Burcham and Josh Hanson singled for a run and Zach Wright had an RBI single.
The Redmen took the lead for good with three runs in the second.
Jaret Bacorn singled, stole second and scored on Smith’s base hit. Jake Blagg had a sacrifice, Seth Nichols walked and stole second, and both scored when Lewis was safe on an error.
The lead went to 6-2 in the third when Hankins singled, stole second, Kaden France singled and stole second, Bacorn grounded out for an RBI and Smith hit a sacrifice fly.
A run scored in the fourth as Hankins singled, stole second and Smith singled.
Rock Hill blew the game open with seven runs in the sixth.
Blagg walked, stole second and third, Lewis walked and Kidd singled in a run.
Hankins was safe on an error for a run, France singled in two runs, Bacorn doubled and Smith singled in two runs.
Smith came around to score the final run on a wild pitch.
Hankins was 3-4, Lewis 2-3, and France and Bacorn 2-4.
Burcham was 2-3 with a double for the Panthers.
The two teams meet at Rock Hill on Monday in a conference game.
