Enjoying the outdoors

This Thursday, thousands of rainbow trout will be released by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources-Division of Wildlife into Lake Vesuvius.

The stocking of the lake will coincide with the Wheelin’ Sportsmen Fishing Event.

For the past 16 years, the Wayne National Forest has hosted the event, established by the National Wild Turkey Federation, which provides physically challenged individuals opportunities to participate in outdoor activities such as fishing, hunting and bird watching.

Fishing on the boardwalk is open for the day to those restricted by age or abilities.

In addition to WNF, the South Hill Longbeards Chapter of the NWTF and the DNR, the event is sponsored by City National Bank.

Each year, Wheelin’ Sportmen draws more than 100 participants to the lake and, thanks to its volunteers, gives many families a chance to enjoy a day in the outdoors that would otherwise be difficult.

This year, the event will get a show of support from the Lawrence County Commission, who will host its weekly meeting at the lake.

Those who are interested in attending can pre-register by calling the Ironton Ranger District at 740-534-6500.

We commend those who help make this possible and encourage the public to take part this year and in future years, as either a volunteer or participant.
