SOUTH POINT — It was one heck of a staring contest, and the South Point Pointers won.
Locked in a scoreless game for five and one-half innings, the Pointers scored twice in the sixth inning to beat the Portsmouth Trojans 2-0 in an Ohio Valley Conference game on Friday.
Douglas Shaffer pitched a two-hitter for the Pointers in going the distance. He struck out eight and walked none.
Portsmouth’s Isaac Kelly gave up only four hits, struck out five and walked three in taking the loss.
“Douglas Shaffer gave us a great effort on the mound. He was very efficient with his pitches and recorded eight strikeouts,” said Pointers’ coach Larry Goodwin.
“The defense supported him as well. We were able to get some timely hits late to get the win. Portsmouth’s defense and pitcher did a nice job tonight.”
The Pointers scored the game’s only two runs after one out in the bottom of the sixth.
Shaffer reached on an error, stole second and scored on a hit by Travis Dillon. Jonathon Henline and Drake McClure both walked to load the bases and Ben Walls was safe on an error to score Dillon.
Dillon was 2-3 for the Pointers (11-1, 7-1).
South Point visits Rock Hill on Monday.
