PROCTORVILLE — Pitchers’ duels are good to watch, but disappointing for the loser.
Fairland’s Garrett Looney and his teammates were disappointed after falling 3-1 to the Portsmouth Trojans on Wednesday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
Looney gave up six hits, struck out five, walked none and two of the runs were earned.
“Garrett was the tough-luck loser tonight. He pitched extremely well and, unfortunately we made two defensive mistakes that gave them three runs,” said Fairland coach Alex Beelen.
“Offensively, we made some good swings but right at them.”
Reece Johnson got the win for Portsmouth as he allowed only three hits, struck out four and walked two. The only run he allowed was unearned.
Dairus Stapleton had an RBI double for Fairland. Eli Bowen was 1-2 and Reilly Sowards went 1-3.
Bryce Wallace and an RBI double for Portsmouth as six different players had a base hit.
Fairland hosts Chesapeake on Thursday.
