‘Not on Fifth Street’ focuses on 1937 flood

The author of “Not on Fifth Street,” a fictional novel based on the 1937 Ohio River flood’s impact on the region, is planning a book signing in Ironton next week.

Kathy Cannon-Wiechman, of Cincinnati, writes historical, young adult fiction for the Highlights Foundation, the nonprofit education group associated with Highlights for Children magazine.

She will be at Consigned Book from noon-4 p.m. on Saturday, May 12, to sign copies of “Not on Fifth Street,” which focuses on the flood that devastated communities along the course of the Ohio River, from Pittsburgh to the Mississippi River.

Cannon-Wiechman based the book loosely on the story of her father, who grew up in Ironton, and tells the story, set in Lawrence County, through her own original characters. In order to write the story, she conducted research in Ironton, where she still has family.

Cannon-Wiechman writes for audiences of eight years of age and above. This is her third release for Highlights.

Consigned Books is located at 221 S. 3rd St.
