Two volunteers were both named the Senior of the Year by the Ironton Senior Center.

Gary Creger and John Krantz were given their awards on Wednesday.

Creger goes to the Senior Center four or five times a week and helps out by working the front desk, helping to serve meals to those who can’t carry a tray and cleaning up.

“Whatever they need me for,” he said. “I enjoy it. And they enjoy having me down there, I’m a riot. I keep them in stitches. If they come in and they’re not happy, I’ll cheer them up.”

Creger and Krantz started at the center as part of Mature Services, but kept going as volunteers after their time with that program ended.

“My favorite part is just socializing and helping the seniors,” Creger said. “I’m a senior, also. But there are seniors down there that are a lot older than I am who need assistance. And that is what I am there for.”

Creger said that Krantz is there every day, unloading trucks and putting things away and cleaning up.

“Anything they need him to do,” he said.

Melinda Nance, coordinator and manager of the Ironton Senior Center, said the two men were chosen because of their volunteer work.

“They come in nearly everyday and they help out with some of the work around here,” she said. “When they come in, it puts the seniors at ease. It’s just a happy feeling and they get along with the seniors so well.”

Krantz did not want to be interviewed for this story.
