HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall Thundering Herd men’s basketball team finalized its 2018-19 non-conference schedule, head coach Dan D’Antoni announced Monday. This year’s non-league slate will be highlighted by games against perennial powers Virginia, Texas A&M, Maryland and others.
“This is by far the strongest schedule we’ve had since I became head coach at Marshall,” D’Antoni said.
“We are playing four tough road games against some really good teams in Maryland, Duquesne, Texas A&M and Virginia. We have some really great home games too against teams that we are becoming really familiar with.”
“With the excitement surrounding our program, we wanted to build a strong schedule to compliment the team we have for next year,” Associate Director of Athletics and Chief of Staff Jeff O’Malley said.
“This schedule coupled with the Conference USA new scheduling model should give a strong strength of schedule at the end of the year.”
The Herd will host six home games, while it will play seven games on the road. For the first time since the 2005-06 season, MU will open its regular season on the road when it travels to Richmond, Ky., to take on Eastern Kentucky.
The Colonels are coached by former Marshall player A.W. Hamilton, who is in his inaugural season at the helm.
Marshall will return home for a three-game homestand when it hosts Hofstra for its home opener on Nov. 11, Mount St. Mary’s on Nov. 14 and North Carolina A&T on the 19th.
After that, the Herd will travel to College Park, Md., to take on the Maryland Terrapins on Nov. 23. It will be the second time the two teams have faced each other in the D’Antoni era, as they met during the 2015-16 season.
Following the Maryland game, MU will return home to welcome the William & Mary Tribe on Nov. 28. After that, Marshall will open up the month of December with a two-game road slate when it travels to Athens, Ohio to face the Ohio Bobcats on Dec. 1 and then to Pittsburgh to take on Duquesne for the first time since the 1978-79 season on Dec. 5.
The Herd will then return to the Henderson Center to close out its non-conference home schedule when it hosts the Toledo Rockets on Dec. 8 and the Morehead State Eagles on Dec. 10.
Following its final home game of 2018, Marshall will close out the non-conference schedule with a three-game road test when it travels to Akron, Ohio to face the Akron Zips on Dec. 15 and then two consecutive power five schools in the Texas A&M Aggies on Dec. 22 and the Virginia Cavilers on Dec. 31.
The contest against the Aggies will mark the first time the Herd has made it out to College Station, Texas since the 1989-90 season.
When Marshall travels to Charlottesville, Va., for the first time since the 1991-92 season, it will mark the No. 1 defense and 351st quickest pace of the 2017-18 season in the Cavilers, while the Herd had the No. 10 offense in the nation and the third quickest pace in the 2017-18 season.
Season tickets for the upcoming 2018-19 season are on sale now through the Marshall Athletic Ticket Office for as low as $10.00 per game, and season ticket renewals have been mailed.
