Michael McDowell

Michael Edward (Mike) McDowell, 76, of Greensboro, North Carolina, gained his angel wings Thursday, Aug. 2, 2018, after a lengthy illness. He passed peacefully in his sleep with his family at his side.
Mr. McDowell was born in Ashand, Kentucky on December 11, 1941, to the late Edward and Jennie Vee (Lowe) McDowell. He was a 1959 graduate of Ashland High School and a U.S. Army veteran. Mr. McDowell obtained his BA degree from Morehead State University in 1966. He went on to work as an insurance claims adjuster and claims manager for General Adjustment Bureau in both Cincinnati and Ashland, Kentucky. He took a position of claims manager with The Putnam Agency in Ashland, Kentucky in 1981, where he worked until retirement in 1997.
Mr. McDowell is survived by his wife, Judith (Keeney) McDowell; and a very special kitty, “Toby.” He is also survived by a son, Christopher, and his wife, Sarah; and his granddaughter, Jasmine, all of Greensboro, North Carolina.
There will be no service. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the American Heart Association, the National Kidney Foundation, the Alzheimer’s Association, the ASPCA, or a no-kill animal shelter.

James Evans
James (Jim) R. Evans, 71, of Ironton, died Sunday, Aug. 5, 2018. He was born in Ashland, Kentucky, the son of the late Paul L. and Eileen Wilson Evans. He was a graduate of Holy Family Catholic School and retired from Sunoco Chemical’s Haverhill plant. He was an avid player of billiards throughout the Tri-State.
Survivors include his wife, Ann Parker Evans; two daughters and one son-in-law, Andrea Downs, of Ironton, and Becky (Anthony) Vanhoose, of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; grandchildren, Robert (Hannah) Downs, Morgan (Derick) Coffee and Chloe Miller; great-grandchildren, Waylon Downs and Elliot Downs; and one brother, Robert P. Evans, of Lakeland, Florida.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Richard L. Evans.
Visitation will be 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Friday at O’Keefe Baker Funeral Home, Ironton. A memorial service will follow at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home with the Rev. Sallie C. Schisler officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jim’s memory to the American Cancer Society, 4324 13th St., Ashland, KY 41102.
