Lady Flyers bounce back with win over SP

SOUTH POINT — It might not be basketball season, but the St. Joseph Lady Flyers seem to know how to rebound.
After losing 8-3 to Fairland on Wednesday, the Lady Flyers rebounded with a 6-2 victory over the South Point Lady Pointers on Thursday.
St. Joseph jumped out in front as Lydia Sheridan scored to start the game on an unassisted goal nine minutes in to give the Lady Flyers a 1-0 lead.
Emma Whaley then had two goals — one off an assist by Bella Whaley — to make it 3-0 at the 28-minute mark.
South Point cut the deficit to within 3-2 as Neele Bennje scored with an assist from Kylee Ellison and then an unassisted goal by Grace Simpson.
Both teams played well defensively in the second half until the Lady Flyers broke through with a goal by Chloe Sheridan off an assist by Laiken Unger at the 52-minute mark.
Emma Whaley got an unassisted goal five minutes later and she scored her fourth goal with an assist from Bella Whaley at the 61-minute mark.
The Lady Flyers’ defensive effort was spearheaded by Faith Mahlmeister, Alex Holtzapfel, Emilee Blankenship, Maddy Whaley and Kaitlyn Sheridan.
St. Joseph also got some good effort off the bench from Isabella Griffiths, Kerri Jenkins, Grace Miller and Sami Anderson.
The Lady Flyers used a total team effort as they opened the season with a 5-1 win at Piketon last Friday.
Emma Whaley scored three goals with Bella Whaley and Chloe Sheridan each scoring a goal.
Proving that they get by with a little help from their friends, the scoring Lady Flyers got assists on all goals as Laiken Unger had two assists while Bella Whaley, Chloe Sheridan and Emilee Blankenship had one assist each.
Goalkeeper Kelsey Malone did her part in the win with eight saves.
