PEDRO — The Rock Hill Redmen had plenty yardage and plenty of points.
But they also had a few more mistakes than they wanted.
Some key mistakes, penalties and turnovers proved costly as the Redmen lost 34-29 to the Oak Hill Oaks on Saturday.
Rock Hill (1-2) outgained the Oaks with 357 total yards — all on the ground — to 277 for the Oaks including 265 rushing.
T.J. McGinnis led the Redmen rushing attack with 198 yards on 25 carries and he scored three touchdowns. Logan Hankins had 93 yards on 11 attempts while Zak Adkins added 63 yards on nine tries with a touchdown.
The Redmen were hurt by two turnovers and a couple of key penalties.
“We had a couple of mistakes on defensive alignment in the second half and a penalty after the interception hurt,” said Redmen coach Mark Lutz.
Oak Hill’s balanced ground game was paced by Colin Hughes who ran nine times for 87 yards and a score. Bayley Clutters had 65 yards on 12 carries with two TDs, Walker Smith nine carries for 52 yards and two scores, and Bradey Chandler had seven tries for 63 yards.
Rock Hill drove to the Oaks’ 27 to start the game only to have their drive stall.
Oak Hill then went 67 yards in eight plays keyed by Chandler’s 37-yard run to the Redmen 5 and Smith scored on a 3-yard run with 4:23 on the clock.
Caden Harden kicked the conversion and it was 7-0.
Disaster struck on the next play after the kickoff as the Redmen fumbled and the Oaks recovered at the 38.
The Oaks scored on the first play of the second quarter as Clutters went one yard to cap and eight-play drive. Harden’s kick put the lead at 14-0.
The Redmen answered with a quick 5-play drive from their own 12-yard line to the Oaks 1-yard line highlighted by runs of 47 and 29 yards by Hankins.
Weather interrupted the game at that point and the teams resumed on Saturday night with McGinnis scoring one yards for the touchdown. Brady Floyd’s point after made it 14-7 with 10:10 left in the half.
Chandler returned the kickoff to the Rock Hill 20-yard line and Smith scored on the next play for a 20-17 lead.
Rock Hill answered with a 70-yard drive in just four plays as McGinnis rambled 47 yards for a touchdown and it was 20-14 with 8:31 left in the half.
The Redmen drove to the Oaks 24 only to have the drive end on an interception.
Rock Hill drove 51 quickly in three plays capped by Adkins’ 11-yard scoring run with 9:08 left in the third quarter and Rock Hill led 21-20.
Hankins came up with an interception at the Oaks’ 32 but the scoring opportunity failed due to an illegal procedure that had the drive end with a blocked field goal.
The Oaks regained the lead on a 43-yard run by Hughes with 3:13 left in the third quarter as he broke several tackles and it was 26-21.
Rock Hill took its final lead with a 68-yard drive capped by McGinnis’ 3-yard run with 6:49 to play and a Brayden Friend pass to Akins on the conversion gave the Redmen a 29-26 lead.
Oak Hill answered with a 56-yard drive that end with a 1-yard run by Clutters with 3:51 to play. Hughes pass to Smith for the conversion and it was 34-29.
Rock Hill had one final chance and drove to the Oaks’ 30-yard line. But a holding penalty helped stall the drive and Oak Hill out the clock.
Oak Hill (2-1) has won eight of the last 11 meetings between the two teams.
This Friday, Rock Hill visits Portsmouth in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
