Waverly outscores Fairland to stay unbeaten

WAVERLY — The Waverly Tigers are still unbeaten thanks to quarterback Haydn’ Shanks.
Shanks was 19-of-29 for 209 yards and four touchdowns as Waverly outscored the Fairland Dragons 41-27 on Friday.
Fairland quarterback Joel Lambiotte was up to the challenge as he hit 32-of-51 passes for 357 yards and two touchdowns.
Waverly (4-0) took a 14-0 first quarter lead as they march 57 yards in eight plays with the opening kickoff and scored on a 20-yard pass from Shanks to Phoenix Wolf and then went 36 yards in just five plays after a short punt and scored on a 26-yard Shanks to Easton Wolf pass.
Fairland got an interception by Brennan West at the 35-yard line and scored on the next play as Lambiotte hit Gavin Hunt with a touchdown pass.
Alec Bruce kick the conversion and Fairland trailed 14-7.
But Waverly came right back with a 65-yard, 12-playd drive capped by a 3-yard pass from Shanks to Will Futhey and it was 21-7.
The Dragons (2-2) answered with an 88-yard, 4-play march as Lambiotte hit West with a 20-yard scoring pass and it was 21-14.
But Waverly got a big punt return and went 15 yards in three plays as P. Shoemaker scored on a 5-yard run with 1:12 left in the half and it was 28-14.
Neither team scored in the third quarter but Waverly then marched 74 yards in just three plays with Ethan Brooker scoring on a 5-yard run with 9:26 left and the lead was 35-14.
Fairland answered again with an 80-yard, 13-play drive capped by Lambiotte’s 1-yard run with 4:45 to play.
After recovering a fumble to end a long Fairland drive, Waverly drove 97 yards in just four plays with Shanks hitting Easton Wolf on a 28-yard scoring pass and it was 41-21 with just 1:03 left.
The Dragons refused to quit and went 80 yards in eight plays as J.D. Brumfield ran 7 yards for the touchdown with no time on the clock.
Fairland visits Rock Hill on Friday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
