GALLIPOLIS — “Listen. Do you want to know a secret? Do you promise not to tell? Whoa oh closer. Let me whisper in your ear. Say the words you want to hear. Happy birthday to coach Blair.”
With apologies to The Beatles and song writer John Lennon, the St. Joseph Lady Flyers and Gallipolis Blue Angels were full of secrets in Saturday’s soccer game.
The Blue Angels had the secret of how to beat the Lady Flyers as they came away with a 3-1 win.
The Lady Flyers kept their secret until returning home when they surprised coach Dan Blair with an early 70th birthday party.
“I am truly blessed to be able to coach these fine young ladies. They help keep me young at heart,” said Blair wo was presented with a framed team photo and a St. Joe Lady Flyers’ shirt.
Gallipolis’ secret wasn’t appreciated by the Lady Flyers who fell behind 3-0 in the first half.
But St. Joseph battled back in the second half to shutout the Blue Angels and picked up a goal from Bella Whaley.
Gallipolis built their first half lead on two goals by Preslee Reed and one by Kirsten Sanders.
“We played flat in the first half but picked up our defense in the second half and kept (Gallipolis) from scoring,” said Blair.
