HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Marshall senior linebacker Chase Hancock (Beckley, W.Va.) was recognized by two national awards on Wednesday.
He was named a semifinalist for the William F. Campbell Trophy by the National Football Foundation (NFF), an award that recognizes an individual as the absolute best football scholar-athlete in the nation.
The NFF will announce 12-14 finalists on Oct. 31, and each of them will receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship as a member of the 60th NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class.
The finalists will travel to New York City for the 61st NFF Annual Awards Dinner on Dec. 4, where their accomplishments will be highlighted in front of one of the most powerful audiences in all of sports.
Live during the event, one member of the class will be declared as the winner of the 29th William V. Campbell Trophy and have his postgraduate scholarship increased to $25,000.
Hancock was also selected as a candidate for the Senior Class Award. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I FBS senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
From the list of 30 candidates, a national committee will select ten finalists for the award in November. Those 10 names will then be placed on the official ballot for a nationwide vote.
Fan balloting will be coupled with votes from coaches and media to determine the recipient of the award.
Hancock, a preseason All-Conference USA selection, is currently tied with teammate Malik Gant for third in the league with 11.3 tackles per contest.
Marshall (2-1) travels to WKU (1-3) Saturday for a 7:30 p.m. ET/6:30 p.m. CT contest that will be carried on Stadium.
