COAL GROVE — If fans attending Tuesday’s Ohio Valley Conference volleyball game expected a hard-fought battle, they got just what they expected.
Coal Grove and Ironton went five sets before the Lady Hornets fought to a five-set win, 19-25, 25-22, 23-25, 27-25 and 15-12 in the tiebreaker.
“Our seniors played for the win,” said Lady Hornets’ coach Tricia Damron.
Mattie Malone had four ace serves with five kills and six tip kills for the Lady Hornets while Taylor Reynolds added 10 kills to the winning effort with Jaiden Griffith getting a game-high 21 points.
Haley Booth had seven of Coal Grove’s 15 points in the tiebreaker.
Kaleigh Murphy had 14 serving points with five tip kills and Addi Dillow had a big all-around game with 10 points, 10 kills and seven tip kills.
“So many times we leave our setters out of the end results, but without them our hitters would not get the kills,” said Damron.
“Caitlin Dillon and Haley Booth left it on the floor with their numerous sets. All the girls moved and saw the floor well tonight.”
In the jayvee game, Coal Grove won in three tough sets, 25-20, 14-25, 25-23. Maddy Hensley had 14 points for the Lady Hornets.
Ironton hosts South Point at 5:30 p.m. Thursday on senior night.
