William Layne

April 2, 1936 — Oct. 17, 2018

William Grant Layne, 82, of Ironton, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2018, at King’s Daughters Medical Center in Ashland, Kentucky. The Lawrence County native was born April 2, 1936, a son of the late Clarence W. and Inez Lawless Layne.
Mr. Layne was a graduate of Ironton High School and a former clerk of the County Commission Board.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Keith Vincent Layne and Clarence David Layne.
He is survived by a brother, Jon Anthony Layne, of Ironton; a sister, Linda Alice (Robert) Vinson, of South Point; a sister-in-law, Linda Bowman Layne, of Coal Grove; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in Woodland Cemetery with the Rev. Jeff Cremeans officiating. Burial will immediately follow. Arrangements were made with Phillips Funeral Home, Ironton.

Wendell Simpson

March 2, 1953 — Oct. 21, 2018

Wendell “O.J.” Simpson, 65, of Ironton, passed away Sunday, Oct. 21, 2018, at Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Kentucky. The Ironton native was born March 2, 1953, a son of the late Reverend Russell and Delcie Cochran Simpson. He is survived by his wife, Beverly Jean Pennington Simpson, whom he married May 9, 2003.
Mr. Simpson was a 1971 graduate of Dawson-Bryant High School. He was a former employee of W.W. Mays Vault Company and Tri-State Wilbert Vault Company and former owner and operator of River Valley Vault Company. Wendell was a member of Linnville Baptist Church in Willow Wood.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Beverly Ann Fout Simpson, a son, Matthew Simpson and two brothers, Russell “Frank” Simpson and Donald Ray Simpson.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Angie Goodman, of Ironton; three brothers, Carl (Mary) Simpson, of Willow Wood, Justin (Carolyn) Simpson, of Scott Town and Gary Simpson, of Kitts Hill; two sisters, Teresa (Frank) Dennison, of Willow Wood; and Pam (Jim) Farley, of Harts, West Virginia and a very special sister-in-law, Mary Wisenberger and brother-in-law, Gary Wisenberger, of Ironton.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Linnville Baptist Church in Linnville, with pastors Mike Triplett and Jeremy Simpson officiating. Burial will follow in Mamre Cemetery and visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Phillips Funeral Home and noon until the time of the service Thursday at the church.
