COAL GROVE — In a game featuring 52 free throw attempts, it was a 3-point goal that was the difference.
The Coal Grove Lady Hornets converted just 12-of-28 free throw attempts and the Oak Hill Lady Oaks were just 12-of-24 at the line.
But Payton Crabtree hit two 3-point goals while Coal Grove got only one by Kaleigh Murphy as the Lady Oaks won a 48-47 season-opening thriller on Monday.
The loss overshadowed a 19-point performance by sophomore Addi Dillow for Coal Grove to lead all scorers. Destiny Dolen and Murphy scored eight each and Jaiden Griffith added seven.
Caitlyn Brisker led Oak Hill with 17 points while Crabtree scored 14. Olivia Clarkson had 13 points.
Coal Grove took a 10-5 first quarter lead as five different players scored. Brisker had all of the Lady Oaks’ points.
The Lady Hornets extended the lead to 25-19 at the half as Griffith scored six points, Dillow four and Murphy three.
Crabtree had 10 points including a pair of 3-pointers and 2-for-2 at the foul line.
Oak Hill cut the deficit to 34-30 after the third quarter as Brisker scored six points and Clarkson five. Dillow had seven of Coal Grove’s nine points.
In the fourth quarter, Coal Grove was only 2-of-7 at the foul line. Dillow scored six points but Brisker and Clarkson had six each and Crabtree four more.
The Lady Oaks were 2-of-6 from the line in the quarter.
Coal Grove hosts Portsmouth next Monday.
