The task was hard enough from the start. Then some unwanted elements surfaced.
The St. Joseph Lady Flyers knew the Greenup County Lady Musketeers were going to be a tough opponent. Not having leading rebounder Faith Mahlmeister due to illness and losing Bella Whaley with an ankle sprain in the second quarter didn’t help matter.
With or without the help, Greenup County knocked off the Lady Flyers 62-25 on Monday for the Lady Musketeers first win.
“We didn’t match up really well with them to start and then we don’t have Faith and lose Bella. Greenup didn’t need any extra help. They’re strong and physical and we’ve got a bunch of young freshmen and sophomores for the most part,” said Lady Flyers’ coach Bart Burcham.
Greenup (1-4) dominated the boards 41-29 as Grace Jackson had seven rebounds and Lauren Hannah and Madison Venderpool got six each.
Maggie Miller had 11 points and Hannah 10 as 12 of Greenup’s 13 players scored.
Kaitlyn Sheridan had nine points, four rebounds and two assists for the Lady Flyers (2-3). Emma Whaley added six points.
Greenup went on an 11-0 run to start the game. The Lady Flyers finally scored on a baseline shot by Laiken Unger at the 4:55 mark.
Bella Whaley made two baskets over the final 1:33 but the Lady Flyers trailed 19-6.
The Lady Musketeers went on another 11-0 run to start the second quarter before a layup by Kaitlyn Sheridan. Bella Whaley was hurt at the 3:37 mark and did not return.
Down 36-8 at the half, the Lady Flyers were down 49-16 at the end of the third quarter and were outscored 13-9 in the fourth quarter.
“We were overmatched, but we played hard and didn’t quit and I liked that,” said Burcham.
