HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — When you don’t shoot well, things don’t usually go well, either.
That was the case for the Fairland Lady Dragons who suffered a cold shooting night in a 53-42 loss to the Huntington Lady Highlanders on Monday.
Fairland shot a dismal 13-for-56 from the field for 23 percent. In fact, the Lady Dragons shot better from the 3-point line — 8-of-29 for 36 percent — than from 2-point range.
Both teams struggled offensively early. Madison Slash scored the first basket at the 4:26 mark as Huntington took a 2-0 lead.
But 3-pointers by Jenna Stone and Harley Lyons gave the Lady Dragons an 8-6 lead with 2:30 left in the first quarter.
Lyons hit another trey with seven minutes on the clock but Alezha Turner answered with a triple of her own and Katie Swan’s basket tied the game with 5:13 left in the half.
Allie Marshall’s two foul shots had Fairland up 17-13 with 2:46 on the clock only to have Marianna Patterson drain two straight 3-pointers as Huntington took a 21-17 lead. Allie Marshall’s basket at the buzzer got Fairland within 21-19 at the half.
Huntington went on a 10-3 run to start the second half and lead 31-22 at the 4:12 mark. Brittany Thompson trifecta and two foul shots by Marshall cut the spread to 33-27. Jackson scored three points and it was 36-27 at the end of the quarter.
Fairland got within 36-33 on a 3-pointer by Lyons with 7:11 to play, but Slash had three points and Jackson a basket to make it 41-33 and the Lady Dragons got no closer than five.
Allie Marshall had 10 points, eight rebounds, four steals and two assists for Fairland (4-3). Lyons hit four 3-pointers and scored 12 points while Emma Marshall had seven rebounds and Jenna Stone six.
Turner had 15 points while Slash and Foley got nine rebounds and Ravyn Goodson seven for Huntington (4-2).
Fairland plays in the Trinity Classic Dec. 27-28.
