COAL GROVE — By knocking down the shots, the Coal Grove Lady Hornets were able to knock out another opponent.
The outside shooting of Addi Dillow and Baylee McKnight enabled the Lady Hornets to beat the Chesapeake Lady Panthers 48-29 in an Ohio Valley Conference game on Thursday.
Dillow hit a pair of 3-pointers in the first quarter and score eight points while McKnight also had a trey and scored five points to stake Coal Grove to a 15-4 lead.
“We came out with a solid performance. We were able to knock down a couple of outside shots early with Dillow and McKnight which made them adjust their defense,” said Lady Hornets’ coach Rick Roach.
“(Chesapeake has) good size which hurt us on the boards, but (Destiny) Dolen did a good job rebounding as usual even though she was out-sized. We were able to come out and play great defense to not allow them to score a point in the third (quarter) and built a sizable lead.”
Dolen and Lauren Crum had four points each in the second quarter as five different players scored and the lead was 29-11 at the half. Shia Ervin had four points for Chesapeake.
Coal Grove’s defense held Chesapeake scoreless in the third quarter while Jaiden Griffith and Dillow scored four points each and the lead ballooned to 44-11.
The Lady Hornets emptied the bench in the fourth quarter and the Lady Panthers used 10 points by Maddie Ward to outscore Coal Grove 18-4.
Dillow finished with 15 points to lead lead a balance offense for Coal Grove (8-2, 4-1). McKnight had nine points, Dolen eight and Crum seven.
Ward had 12 points and Ervin six for Chesapeake (4-6, 2-3).
On Monday, Coal Grove visits Ironton and Chesapeake hosts Fairland.
