CHESAPEAKE — Matt Mondlak might have been playing at the neutral site but, in his mind, he was playing “downtown.”
Mondlak had his best career shooting game from the 3-point line as he drained five 3-pointers and scored a game-high 19 points to lead the Fairland Dragons to a 45-41 win over the Jackson Ironmen in the Beast of the Southeast Classic on Saturday.
Jackson took an early 13-8 first quarter lead as Cooper Donaldson hit a pair of 3-pointers and two foul shots and Caleb Wallis scored five.
Clayton Thomas had a trifecta as four different players scored for Fairland.
The Dragons limited the Ironmen to only a basket by Caden Donaldson in the second quarter and used a pair of treys by Mondlak and another by Thomas to go up 17-15 at the half.
Fairland extended its lead to 31-24 after three quarters as Mondlak took over with three baskets from beyond the arc. Treylan Davis had five points for Jackson including 3-of-4 from the foul line.
Wallis scored eight points and Davis seven in the fourth quarter as Jackson (11-3) mounted a comeback, but Mondlak had a pair of baskets and Thomas was 3-for-4 and Ian Chinn and Jacob Polcyn both 2-for-2 as the Dragons converted 8-of-11 from the foul line to secure the win.
Thomas had nine points, three rebounds and four assists for Fairland. Chinn had eight points and four rebounds, Polcyn three rebounds and four assists and Aiden Porter three rebounds and three assists.
Wallis had 15 points, three rebounds and three steals while Davis got 14 points and 10 rebounds to pace Jackson. Cooper Donaldson added eight points.
