SOUTH POINT — Every second counts. Just ask Roger Staggs.
Staggs had a putback with one second to play that lifted the South Point Pointers over the New Boston Tigers 53-51 on Saturday.
The win came one day after a lopsided loss to Ironton in which the Pointers scored only 18 points.
“We played with a bit more energy tonight than (Friday) and we hit some shots,” said Pointers’ coach Travis Wise. “It was a good win for the kids to help give them back some confidence.”
Chance Gunther scored 21 points and Austin Webb added 10 to pace the Pointers (5-5).
New Boston (7-5) was led by Tyler Caldwell with 15 points and Grady Jackson had 10. Kyle Sexton and Marcus Saunders added nine each.
New Boston led 14-12 after the first as Caldwell scored six points and Jerome McKinley had five points including a 3-pointer.
Gunther hit a trifecta and score seven points while Brody Blackwell had a 3-pointer for South Point.
The Pointers picked up their defense and held New Boston to eight points in the second quarter and took a 29-22 halftime lead.
Gunther hit another trey and scored five points while Webb scored six points.
New Boston came out firing in the third quarter and outscored the Pointers 18-9 to take a 40-38 lead.
Jackson scored nine points with Sexton added five points to lead the Tigers. Gunther have five more points including his third 3-pointer of the game.
Blackwell knocked down his second trey of the game and Gunther had four points to offset five points by Caldwell had a 3-pointer by Saunders.
But Staggs came up with his last-second heroics to give South Point the win.
The Pointers have tough week ahead as they travel to Rock Hill on Tuesday, Coal Grove on Friday and play Ripley in the Dave Young Classic on Saturday at North Adams.
