Lady Dragons use strong 2nd half to down Pointers

PROCTORVILLE — That’s why they play two halves.
The Fairland Lady Dragons and South Point Lady Pointers were separated by nine points at halftime. Then came the second half and the Lady Dragons took over.
Fairland outscored the Lady Pointers by 16 points in the second half and took a 67-42 Ohio Valley Conference win on Monday.
The win puts Fairland (10-2, 6-1) into a first-place tie in the OVC with Coal Grove while South Point (9-3, 5-2) is in second place.
Fairland took a 6-0 lead to start the game before Maddy Khounlavong hit a trey for South Point at the 3:48 mark.
Ashley Perkey and Emilee Whitt hit 3-pointers as the Lady Pointers took a 9-8 lead with 2:10 left in the quarter.
Two foul shots by Jenna Stone gave Fairland a 10-9 lead but a basket by Sarah Roach had South Point up 11-10 at the end of the quarter.
Khounlavong’s 3-pointer and a foul shot by Roach had South Point ahead 18-13 only to have the Lady Dragons catch fire.
Emma Marshall and Brittany Thompson hit back-to-back 3-pointers and the Lady Dragons were up 19-18 at the 2:26 mark.
Another triple by Marshall and baskets by Kelsie Warnock and Thompson pushed the lead to 26-20.
Perkey cut the deficit to 29-22 only to have Warnock score with two seconds on the clock and it was 31-22 at the half.
Perkey and Whitt scored to begin the second half and cut the gap to 31-27. Harley Lyons and Warnock scored and Lyons then hit two straight 3-pointers and the lead was 41-27 with 3:48 on the clock.
Allie Marshall scored inside and Lyons hit another triple to make it 50-30 before Whitt’s basket with 34 seconds left in the quarter had it at 50-32.
Fairland went on a 10-2 run early in the fourth quarter to open up a 60-38 lead with 3:40 to virtually seal the outcome.
The Lady Dragons had four players in double figures as Harley Lyons had 14 points, Allie Marshall 13, and Warnock and Thompson 11 each.
Warnock had 12 rebounds and Marshall nine along with seven assists and five blocked shots.
Khounlavong and Whitt scored 11 points each for South Point. Perkey had five rebounds, Khounlavong three assists while Whitt had four rebounds, two assists and two blocks.
On Thursday, Fairland visits Ironton and South Point hosts Chesapeake.
