NEW BOSTON — The St. Joseph Flyers are a young team. They got even younger when they lost Ryan Payne for the rest of the season.
The youth was evident on Tuesday as the Flyers lost to the New Boston Tigers 83-62.
“We learned some lessons with the young kids. We’ve got to get strong. Their two big kids had their way with us,” said Flyers’ coach Christ Barnes.
“We didn’t quit. Zach (Roach) had a nice game and Max (Weber) and Jackson (Rowe) played pretty well. Give New Boston credit. They played well. They could be the best team in our sectional right now.”
Roach hit five 3-pointers and scored a game-high 25 points for the Flyers (9-3). Rowe had three triples and scored 10 points.
New Boston (8-5) was led by Tyler Caldwell with 21 points and Kyle Sexton with 20.
The Flyers had 18 turnovers with 16 coming in the first half including their first seven possessions.
Caldwell had 10 points and Sexton six as the Tigers took a 25-13 first quarter lead. Isaac Whaley had Roach hit 3-pointers for the Flyers.
New Boston extended its lead to 46-25 at the half as Sexton got six more points and the Tigers hit three 3-pointers in the quarter.
J.C. Damron had four points while Rowe had a trey and a foul shot.
The Flyers outscored the Tigers in the third quarter and trailed 60-43. Roach drained a pair of trifectas and scored 10 points and Rowe added another triple.
But Caldwell hit a 3-pointer and scored seven points as New Boston outscored the Flyers 23-19 in the fourth quarter.
Roach hit two more 3-pointers and scored 10 points while Matt Sheridan and Rowe had treys.
St. Joseph hosts Symmes Valley on Saturday.
