Pointers hold off Redmen for OVC win, 62-56

PEDRO — One thing the South Point Pointers are learning is that every opponent is dangerous.
The Pointers battled their way past the Rock Hill Redmen 62-56 on Tuesday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
“We told the kids coming into the game you can’t take this team lightly. They’ve played with a lot of teams. We played with a lot of energy,” said Pointers’ coach Travis Wise.
“Marcus (Malone) stepped up. He had two back-to-back charges that helped out.”
Chance Gunther scored 25 points including 10-f-13 at the foul line, Austin Webb had 14 points and Marcus Malone had a pair of 3-pointers and scored 12 points to lead South Point (6-5, 3-3).
Rock Hill (3-8, 0-6) was paced by Owen Hankins with 19 points and four steals while Kadin France had 16 points and 11 rebounds.
Logan Hankins added 10 points and three steals while Jake Blagg had seven assists for the Redmen.
Malone hit his two 3-pointers in the first quarter, Brody Blackwell had a try and Gunther scored five points as the Pointers took a 20-15 lead.
France and Owen Hankins got four points each and Logan Hankins hit a triple for the Redmen.
Rock Hill got within 34-28 at the half as Owen Hankins scored six points, France four and Logan Hankins hit another 3-pointer in the second quarter.
Gunther hit a 3-pointer and both he and Webb scored five points in the quarter.
The Redmen inched a little closer in the third quarter as Owen Hankins hit a 3-pointer and scored six points while France added two more and it was now 49-45.
Malone and Webb got four points each for South Point.
But in the fourth quarter, the Pointers outscored the Redmen 13-11 as they converted 9-of-14 from the foul line including 8-of-11 by Gunther who scored 12 of the 13 points.
The Redmen were 4-of-11 at the line in the fourth quarter and just 9-of-20 for the game.
On Friday, South Point hosts Coal Grove and Rock Hill entertains Fairland.
