ASHLAND, Ky. — This time, one bad apple didn’t spoil the whole bunch.
Despite a bad third quarter, the St. Joseph Lady Flyers beat the Rose Hill Lady Royals 43-35 on Monday.
“We played hard and we played well three of the four quarters,” said Lady Flyers’ coach Bart Burcham. “I was pleased with our toughness when (Rose Hill) came back and cut the game to two points.”
Faith Mahlmeister scored six points, Bella Whaley hit a 3-pointer and scored five points and Chloe Sheridan drained a trifecta as St. Joseph took a 14-6 lead.
Bellamee Sparks had four points for the Lady Royals.
Emma Whaley and Mahlmeister scored four points each as the Lady Flyers extended the lead to 24-11 at the break.
St. Joseph struggled offensively and scored just two points. Rose Hill scored 13 points and cut the deficit to 26-24.
Baylee Trimble and Shelby Nibert had four points each for the Lady Royals.
But the Lady Flyers kicked back into gear in the fourth quarter as Kaitlyn Sheridan scored six points, Bella Whaley got four points including 2-of-2 at the foul line and Emma Whaley converted 5-of-6 free throw attempts.
Delaynee Sparks had six for the Lady Royals.
“We panicked a little and rushed our shots. But we righted the ship and fought through it. We passed the ball great,” said Burcham.
Mahlmeister finished with a double-double as she got 14 points and 12 rebounds. Bella Whaley and Emma Whaley got nine points each while Kaitlyn Sheridan added eight points.
Bella Whaley had seven rebounds with Chloe Sheridan pulling down six rebounds.
Baylee Trimble scored 13 points, Delaynee Sparks 10 and Bellamee Sparks eight.
The Lady Flyers visit St. Patrick on Thursday and host Ohio Valley Christian at 6 p.m. Friday on senior night.
