COAL GROVE — A member of the Dawson-Bryant Board of Education has been recognized for his long commitment to Dawson-Bryant schools.

The Rev. Jim Beals, of Coal Grove, has served on the school system’s board for decades.

“He’s been with us for more than 20 years,” Superintendent Steve Easterling said.

Last week, he was recognized at the Ohio School Boards Association’s Southeast Region spring conference, where he was presented with the Veteran School Board Member Award.

“He has a real concern for young people and our students,” Easterling said. “And also for our education system and hiring quality teachers. He’s a volunteer with different organizations and speaks to youth groups.”

Easterling said Beals’ commitment goes beyond the twice a month board meetings.

“He really takes his job on the board serious,” he said.

Beals who is retired from Marathon Oil, is the son of Gilbert Beals, who serves as the principal of Dawson-Bryant Elementary. He is also the pastor at Zoar Baptist Church, where Easterling attends.

The southeast Region is comprised of 18 counties representing 84 school districts and the award goes to board members who have served 10, 15 and, in Beals’ case, 20 years.
