Blackwell, Pointers roll by Soldiers in season opener
SOUTH POINT — Brody Blackwell took care of the Grace Christian Soldiers offense and his South Point Pointers’ teammates took care of the rest.
Blackwell pitched a five-inning 3-hitter and the Pointers banged out 14 hits as they blanked Grace Christian 10-0 Saturday in the second opener.
Blackwell struck out eight and did not walk a batter.
“Brody Blackwell pitched a great game. It was a good opening day for us. We have a big week next week with five non-conference games to prepare us for the OVC schedule that begins on April 1,” said Pointers’ coach Larry Goodwin.
The Pointers took a 3-0 lead in the first when Drew Smith was hit by a pitch, Brycen McCann doubled for a run, Blackwell walked, and Drake McClure had a two-run double.
The lead went to 5-0 in the second.
Nakian Dawson singled, move up on an error, McCann doubled for a run, Blackwell was hit by a pitch and McClure had an RBI single.
A run scored in the fourth when Smith singled, stole second and McClure singled.
South Point ended the game with four runs in the fifth.
Ben Walls, Grant Gifford and Brandon Dillon all singled for a run. Dawson and Zach Cline each had an RBI single and Smith delivered the walk-off RBI single.
South Point had 14 hits with McClure going 3-3 with a double and three runs batted in. McCann was 2-3 with two doubles and two RBI, Dawson 3-3 and an RBI and Smith 2-3 with an RBI.
