PEDRO — The Symmes Valley Lady Vikings kept their cool.
The Lady Vikings worked their way out of three tough situations as they beat the Coal Grove Lady Hornets 3-1 on Saturday in the season opener at the Queen of the Hill Classic.
“We worked out of a couple of big jams. Emily Sharp threw a runner out twice at home and Sarah (Kingery) worked out of a bases-loaded, no out jam. The kids held their composure pretty well,” said Lady Vikings’ coach Jeff “Odie” Estep.
Sarah Kingery got the win with a five-hitter. She struck out five and walked one. Kingery also went 2-3 at the plate.
Symmes Valley took a 1-0 lead in the first.
Rachael Hayes walked, Morgan Jenkins put down a sacrifice, Kingery grounded out Hayes and scored on a wild pitch.
The lead went to 2-0 in the third when Jenkins and Kingery singled and Kara Saunders had an RBI double.
Coal Grove got its run in the fifth.
Emily Carpenter reached on an error, Addi Dillow singled and Lauren Crum was safe on error as the run scored.
The Lady Vikings added an insurance
Ericca Ross walked, courtesy runner Maggie Wise stole second and Emily Sharp delivered an RBI single.
Dillow went 3-4 to pace Coal Grove.
