SOUTH POINT — It was a good week for the Fairland Dragons.
The Dragons held off the South Point Pointers 7-5 in an Ohio Valley Conference game on Friday to complete the week 3-0 in the league.
“We played flat the first three innings and we were down 5-0 quickly. We bounced back the last four innings and played well, but high school baseball is a seven-inning game and we need to be more consistent throughout the game,” said Pointers’ coach Larry Goodwin.
Including a non-league win over Huntington St. Joe, Fairland was 4-0 on the week.
Fairland jumped in front 2-0 in the first inning as Gavin Hunt singled, Dacoda Chapman doubled, Tucker Adkins walked and Garrett Looney had a two-run single.
The Dragons added a run in the second when Bryan Defoe walked, Brennan West reached on an error and Chapman hit a sacrifice fly.
The lead expanded to 5-0 in the top of the third.
Adkins reached on an error, Looney doubled, Kyle Rankin was hit by a pitch and Alex Rogers hit a sacrifice fly. Defoe walked and West had an RBI single.
South Point came to life and scored four runs in the bottom of the inning.
Brendon Dillon walked and scored on a double by Brycen McCann Brody Blackwell singled for an RBI and Drake McClure walked.
Ben Walls was safe on an error as Blackwell scored and Nakian Dawson was safe on an error to score McClure.
Fairland got what proved to be the winning runs in the top of the sixth.
West walked, stole second and scored on a hit by Hunt. Chapman reached on a dropped third strike with Hunt advancing to third base. Reilly Sowards then hit a sacrifice fly.
The Pointers got a run in the bottom of the inning only to fall short.
Dawson singled, Justin Collins and Dillon both walked and Drew Smith grounded out as a run scored.
Hunt went four innings for the win. He gave up three hits, four runs — one earned — with four strikeouts and two walks.
Hunt and Looney each went 2-4 as the Dragons had seven hits.
